PROTOTYPE MODEL

TEAMS & STORIES

Model Mars journeys begin with stories. Each story, set in a Mars settlement, presents an inter-disciplinary challenge. Youth participants take on roles in the stories, organize themselves as teams, and begin collaborative journeys.

ARTIFACTS

Each team creates a representation of its journey, experience and approach to solving their challenge. Artifacts can be objects, media, live events, music, stories and more, and each is accompanied by a narrative describing its creation. All materials are archived in the Mars Planetary Museum.

SETTLEMENTS

Communities are based on actual Mars locations, each named for an individual who has been instrumental in Mars exploration history.

MARS MUSEUM

Alongside the team journeys, a specialized curation team works to design and create a planetary museum for archiving and exhibiting team artifacts and narratives, eventually to create a living history of human habitation on Mars.

JOURNEYS

Team journeys take place over a set period of time and allow youth participants time and resources needed to identify problems and opportunities and work out solutions to the challenges presented in the stories.

MARS CONVENING

At the end of the journeys, all team members, their envoys and advisors and the larger Model Mars Community gather in the Mars Commons to report on their experiences, unveil their artifacts, open the Mars Museum, connect lessons and insights to Earth, and hear from space and other luminaries.
